JIT Flow Simulation

The “Paper Airplane” Exercise

This is a simple, but powerful, teaching tool that allows the demonstration of nearly every JIT principle and gives an opportunity to discuss the rest.   The power is in the flexibility of the exercise to be adapted and modified to nearly any circumstance.

The arrangement is that 6 participants actually “play the game” and the rest of the audience become active Lean observers and analysers.

This game has been used as an extensive teaching tool by many in the manufacturing industry. Many teams play it regularly, because each time they play, a new level of understanding emerges, with some variations, intended or otherwise.   It teaches the principles of JIT, Kanban, Single Piece Flow, and with variations Heijunka (load levelling / line balancing) and Lean Accounting.
